Today I’m sharing how I built up my freezer stash of breastmilk in just one week while working full time!
First of all, let me say that I am so sorry it’s been a few weeks since my last post. I just got back from my first business trip since having Isaac and I’ve been stressed, to say the least. He’s exclusively breastfed and I was a little bit freaked out when I realized he would need about 90 oz of breastmilk while I was gone for three days. When I found out about the trip, we only had 70 oz stored! I had to figure out how to build my stash FAST. I’ve gotten some really great tips from other mamas in my breastfeeding Facebook groups and I thought I would share how I was able to pump 36 ounces EXTRA (on top of what Isaac needed throughout the week) to store for my business trip.
I found this lactation boosting oatmeal recipe. It tastes really good (I add in Pumpkin Pie Spice for fall because I’m basic) and it has helped me a ton. I use quick oats instead of old-fashioned. Mornings are hectic at our house so I don’t always get breakfast in. If I don’t get to sit down for breakfast, I’ll eat this at lunchtime or after dinner. You can pre-packaged in Ziploc bags and then make at work, too. You just need to add water. I add 1 cup of water to every 1/2 cup of oats.
I was skeptical about this tea. I’ve heard that it can give some babies gas. However, I drank one cup and I was engorged 😱 it’s amazing! I just limit to one cup per day to avoid a gassy baby. I also brew it with another type of tea since the taste of this one alone is AWFUL. It tastes like licorice by itself. I like to brew it with this peach tea!
BodyArmor and Powerade Zero
I’ve talked about BodyArmor before on the blog, so you know how much I love it. Orange Mango is my favorite flavor. I really love Powerade Zero as well plus it has no sugar/carbs. My favorite flavor is Mixed Berry. I drank at least one of these a day.
Okay, this one was a huge help. I would drink a dark beer (oatmeal stouts are really great for boosting supply, here is my favorite) every other night. Dark beers contain ingredients which can actually increase the hormone prolactin which tells your body to produce milk. Amazing! This really did work well for me. I woke up each morning very full and that was even with Isaac nursing during the night. I never drank more than one or two beers. Remember, if you are too drunk to drive, you are too drunk to nurse. Don’t go overboard with it, ladies.
Extra Pump Sessions
I added in THREE additional pump sessions to increase my supply. I added one first thing in the morning after Isaac’s first feeding (when I’m the fullest), one at work at lunch, and one more after Isaac goes to sleep at 7/8pm. This seemed to really help tell my body “make more milk now!”. Since I’ve gotten my stash built up, I’ve gone back to my normal pumping routine. You can check out my routine here.
Here’s a big one. I know as moms we get so busy that we often forget to even eat a decent meal. I made SURE to eat a ton when I was trying to increase my supply. This is no time for dieting, ladies (that feels good to say). I have dieted since having Isaac and I’ve lost weight but I had to go off track for a few weeks to help boost my supply and make sure he had milk and that’s OKAY. I tried to get in extra snacks as much as I could, eat breakfast (oatmeal), and eat a big dinner often going back for seconds. I know it sounds crazy, but your body is working so hard to make milk and you have to give it lots of fuel.
I really hope these tips help you out as you work to make more liquid gold for your precious little one. Please let me know if you have any questions! Do you have any tips for me? I’d love to hear how you make more milk!
Also, stay tuned for a very detailed post about how to pump and store while traveling and how to get that precious milk through the TSA. Hint: it ain’t easy.
